Footprints in the Sand, Sarasota,
FL When you walk on the earth, you leave footprints. These footprints
may be seen as in the sand or they may be just the impressions that you leave on someone. We touch so many people during
our lifetime and may never realize how we affect their lives. By creating my paintings, teaching and doing the
genealogy research that I enjoy, I am leaving my footprints on others including future generations. I encourage you
to do the same. Take some lessons, create a piece of art, write a story about your life, interview your older relatives
and make a recording. You will never know how much these things will touch someone's life.

Photography has always been an interest of mine but then I did not know what to do with
all those pictures. Over ten years ago, I began making greeting cards using rubber stamps, chalk, and markers. Then
I discovered how to put those same tools to use by creating scrapbooks. About the same time, I saw Donna Dewberry on
PBS and made a donation so that I could get a One Stroke Painting Kit and learn to paint. Like many others, the kit sat
for several years before I began to paint. In 2003 after my son, Keith, graduated from Appalachian State University,
I decided that it was my turn to complete my college education and enrolled in the Adult Degree Program at Vermont College,
Montpelier, Vermont. My area of focus was history and creative writing. One of the course requirements was a hands
on art course. I thought of the One Stroke Kit and the books that I had purchased. Surely, I could do something
with those. With
my interest in history and genealogy along with my deep roots in North Carolina, I had attended a local program to commemorate
the 75th Anniversary of the Luray Textile Mill Strike in Gastonia, NC. From the pictures that I had taken
along with elements to represent the materials produced by the mill; I created a collage. In addition, I used the acrylics
to enhance some pictures and to decorate the background. I also painted an acrylic landscape based on a picture of my
yard. My professor encouraged me to continue with the art in addition to my history and creative writing interests. I
knew from those experiences that I was hooked on painting. In November 2005, I earned my Batchelor
of Arts degree and for the first time in two years enjoyed the holidays with my family. I still had two major goals to
accomplish: becoming a Certified Genealogist and a One Stroke Certified Instructor. In February 2006 I attended
a One Stroke Certification Course and became a Certified Instructor. In August 2006, I retired from Wachovia Bank, NA. I have been selling my painted items at festivals and craft shows for several years. In
August 2006, I began teaching One Stroke, Scrapbooking, and Paper Arts. I have attended the One Stroke Super Education
Convention in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In addition, I regularly attend continuing education One Stroke Training Camps. I
feel that continuing education is the key to improving my skills and therefore making me a better artist and teacher. Recently,
I have been taking oil classes and have discovered that I really enjoy the oil paints.
My most recent accomplishment was to become a Studio Home Dimensions Certified
Teacher in Polymer Clay. The clay has opened up a whole new world for me. The clay can stand alone or be
combined with painted items for added dimension.
I continue to discover different types of art and I hope that you do as well. Keep those
paint brushes dirty and don't be afraid to try something new!
